Youth Composer Competition
The Pacific Symphonic wind ensemble (PSWE) is excited to announce the new inaugural PSWE Composer Competition which started in the 2018/19 season. This is a unique opportunity for up to 3 students to experience the art of composing for wind ensemble with the ultimate prize of having their work performed by PSWE in June 2019 and adopted into PSWE repertoire. The selected composers will have works included in the final cycle for the PSWE season, including a performance and live-recording, a part-preparation seminar, and composition masterclass. All applicants are invited to the part-preparation seminar, and composition masterclass.
Eligibility and Requirements
The composition competition is open to composers of any age residing in British Columbia. The selection committee will be looking for a creative personal voice, knowledge of instrumentation, and stylistic originality.
Works must be scored for a maximum instrumentation of:
Woodwinds: 5 flutes (1 piccolo, 1 alto double)
1 oboe (doubles English horn)
6 Bb Clarinets (3rd doubles Eb Clarinet)
1 Alto Clarinet
1 Bb Bass clarinet
2 Bassoons (1 contra double)
2 Eb Alto Saxophones (1st doubles Bb Soprano Saxophone)
1 Bb Tenor saxophone
1 Eb Baritone Saxophone
Brass: 4 F Horns
3 Bb Trumpets (1 doubles FlugelHorn)
1 Euphonium
2 Tenor Trombones
1 Bass Trombone
1 Tuba
1 string bass
Percussion: 3 players (Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Tenor Drums, Cymbals, Drum Kit, Glockenspiel, Xylophone, Vibraphone, Chimes, Marimba, additional percussion may be accepted on depending on availability and logistics)
